Red is the painter's least cooperative colour – it covers badly and turns brown the moment you shade it. This set answers that with a ready ladder: Burnt Red and Deep Red as shadows, Matt Red and Cadmium Red as the base, Light Orange and Volcanic Yellow as highlights. Nothing to mix and hope for – the gradient is prepared and works equally on a demon, on fire and on a red uniform.

What to combine it with

FAQ

How do I stop red turning brown when shaded?
Do not shade with brown or black. Use Burnt Red and Deep Red, which are in the set for exactly that – they add depth without shifting the hue.

How many coats does red need over a dark base?
Usually two or three thin ones. The faster route is a base of Volcanic Yellow or Light Orange with red over it – a yellow undercoat lifts the saturation noticeably.

Can the paints be bought individually?
Yes. These are standard shades from the AK 3rd Generation range in 17 ml bottles, so when one runs out you only replace that one.

Can they be airbrushed?
Yes. Thinned with 3rd Generation thinner they pass through a 0.2 mm nozzle as easily as lacquer paints. Neat, they are meant for brushwork.
